Privacy Policy

Your privacy matters to us. This Privacy Policy explains what information Epic Spelling Bee collects, how we use and protect it, and the choices available to you.

Last updated: August 2026

Privacy at a Glance

  • We only collect the information needed to run Epic Spelling Bee and keep your account working.
  • We do not sell personal information.
  • Payments and subscriptions are handled by Stripe — we never receive your full card number.
  • Free practice, progress, achievements and profile settings are stored in your own browser.
  • You can contact us to access, correct, or delete your account information.

This is a summary only. The full policy is below.

1. Information We Collect

Visitors and free users. You can practice without an account. In that case your session score, free-practice usage count, Word of the Day progress, profile nickname and theme choices, practice statistics, missed words and achievements are stored in your own browser's local storage on your device. We do not receive that information on our servers.

Account holders and members. When you create an account we store the email address, password (stored securely by our authentication provider and never visible to us in readable form) and the username you choose. If you subscribe, we store your membership status, billing cadence, renewal date and the identifiers our payment provider uses to reference your customer and subscription records.

Contact and support. If you use the Contact page, we store the name, email address and message you submit so we can respond, and we send a copy to our support inbox.

Technical information. Like most websites, our hosting and infrastructure providers process standard technical request information (such as IP address and browser type) in order to serve pages and keep the service secure. We may also receive error reports when something in the app breaks.

2. How We Use Information

  • Create, secure and maintain your account
  • Provide spelling practice, Word of the Day, the Word Bank and multiplayer features
  • Show your progress, accuracy, missed words and achievements
  • Manage memberships, trials, renewals and cancellations
  • Respond to contact and support requests
  • Keep the service reliable and protect against abuse
  • Diagnose errors and improve Epic Spelling Bee

3. Practice & Progress Data

Your learning data — words practiced, correct and incorrect answers, accuracy, progress by difficulty level, missed words, corrected and mastered words, streaks and achievements — is currently saved in your browser's local storage on the device you practice with. It is not uploaded to a personal learning profile on our servers, which also means it does not automatically transfer between devices or browsers, and clearing your browser storage clears it.

Multiplayer sessions are intentionally kept separate: multiplayer results do not count toward your personal Solo Practice statistics, accuracy, streaks or achievements. Solo Practice is the only mode that updates your long-term progress.

4. Payments & Memberships

Memberships and subscription payments are processed by Stripe. Card details are entered on Stripe's secure checkout — Epic Spelling Bee does not receive or store your full payment card number. We store only what we need to know whether your membership is active: your subscription status, plan cadence, renewal date and the reference identifiers Stripe provides.

Stripe processes your payment information under its own privacy policy and terms.

5. Cookies & Local Storage

We use cookies and browser storage for the app to function — not for advertising. Specifically, they are used to keep you signed in, remember your profile nickname and theme, track free daily practice usage, remember which plan you selected before checkout, and store the practice progress described above.

6. How Information Is Shared

We do not sell personal information. We share information only with the service providers we need to operate Epic Spelling Bee: our payment processor (Stripe), our authentication, database and email infrastructure provider, and our hosting provider. These providers process information on our behalf so that accounts, memberships, emails and the website itself work.

We may also disclose information where we are required to do so by law, or where it is reasonably necessary to protect the rights, safety and security of our users or our service.

7. Children's Privacy

Epic Spelling Bee is designed for family and classroom learning, and many of our spellers are children. Accounts are intended to be created and managed by a parent, guardian, teacher or other responsible adult — not by young children on their own.

We deliberately keep account information minimal: creating an account requires only an email address, a password and a username. We do not ask for a date of birth, age, school, address or phone number, and we do not knowingly collect more information than that from a child. Children can also use free practice with no account at all, in which case their activity stays in the browser on their own device.

Because we do not collect age information, we cannot verify a user's age, and we do not currently offer a separate parental-consent workflow. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child has created an account, or you would like to review or delete information associated with a child's account, please contact us and we will help.

8. Data Retention

We keep account and membership information for as long as your account exists, and for as long as needed afterward to meet legal, accounting or security obligations. Contact-form messages are kept so we have a record of support conversations.

Practice and progress data stored in your browser stays there until you reset your progress or clear your browser storage. Account deletion is currently handled manually: contact us and we will delete your account information.

9. Data Security

We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards designed to protect information associated with Epic Spelling Bee accounts, including encrypted connections, managed authentication and database access rules that restrict account data to the account holder. No method of transmission or storage can be guaranteed to be completely secure, so we cannot promise absolute security.

10. Your Privacy Choices

  • Update your username, profile tag and theme at any time from your account and profile settings.
  • Reset your practice progress from the Progress page, or clear it by clearing your browser storage.
  • Change your password from the Account page using the password reset option.
  • Manage or cancel your membership from the billing section of your account.
  • Contact us to request access to, correction of, or deletion of your account information.

11. Third-Party Services

Some features rely on trusted third-party providers: Stripe for payments and subscriptions, our authentication and database provider for accounts, an email service for account and support emails, and a hosting provider for the site. These providers only receive the information needed to perform their part of the service.

12. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time as Epic Spelling Bee evolves. When we make a material change, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page occasionally.
